Kettle Moraine Lake Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM) Update and Control Plan
The KMLA performed a “test run” of mechanical harvesting on August 21st-23rd 2023. After successfully acquiring a permit from the DNR, the KMLA contracted Midwest Aquatics to harvest approximately a 4- acre plot, consisting predominately of EWM, in the navigational path between the islands in the north end of the lake. We performed this trial to explore the feasibility of using harvesting as a supplemental tool in the future. The process went fairly smoothly, and a path was cleared in the boat path.
Survey maps have yet to be evaluated to determine what areas are viable for harvesting, as depth restrictions and guidelines need to be considered.
The results of the whole lake survey performed by Onterra, shows we are not back to pre-treatment levels of EWM, but that considerable bounce back growth has occurred. Areas not previously treated have grown to be highly dominant and surface matting is present.
We are working with Onterra and the DNR to explore a whole lake treatment plan for 2024 as Onterra has seen some more long- term results on other projects like ours. This plan comes with a hefty price-tag, and we are currently pursuing DNR grant funds to help us accomplish such a project.
As our KMLA Board members work diligently to advance our attack on the EWM population, we ask for your continued support and donations. Thank you to all who have supported this mission in the past and thank you in advance for your continued support. We could not do this without you!

Mechanical Harvesting on the Lake
Photos are from mechanical harvesting performed in August 2023. The first picture is the weed harvester after it had emptied a load of weeds. The second photo is a full load of weeds. The third picture is a conveyor belt, the weeds were emptied from the harvester onto a conveyor belt which emptied into the dump truck and hauled away. Approximately 4 acres were harvested over a two-day period.
Thank you to the Tiki Beach Resort for allowing us to use the boat launch for 2 days!
